The intoxicating, illustrated history of working men’s clubs. Founded by a teetotaller social reformer, by their mid-century heyday more than 7 million people were members. The clubs became the cornerstone of Britain’s social life with 3,000-seat venues hosting comedy, family entertainment and stars like Shirley Bassey, Louis Armstrong and the Bee Gees. As the movement approaches its 160th anniversary, this exuberant book brings to life the thrills and spills of a cultural phenomenon.
